Furoshiki

Hand drawn type, from decorative to experimental lettering, it's a great challenge for me and I am exploring new styles to develop my set of skills in this field.

Letter forms and type compositions are a reaction of self expression, they are about being expressive, they are about breaking rules, and impress a unique, artistic stamp in my work.

For the Furoshiki illustration design assignment, we were asked to research and create a decorative cloth that could be used for everything that we wanted to. The main process was to develop  the concept without using the internet, and start getting inspired by things around.

So I decided to make a silk textile wrapping cloth for wine packaging. The southern character and personality of the product is reflected in the influence of the space from where it belongs.

Since Savannah is so rich in architectural details, and typography, I started to make pictures of houses, numbers, letters, and any other elements that could build the idea.

Glam Dog & Stencil Print

I had never draw so many dogs in my entire life, but in the end I had lots of fun with it.

“Pooches and Pets” was an assignment where you need to see strange and funny connections between the owners and their dogs, so one could guess that this visual documentation could turn into great discoveries.

Last month, there was an event in Savannah where owners dressed their pets and it was amazing to see flower dogs, bananas, pirates, and even a cat dressed dog???

I made various sketches from watercolor, to ink, pencil and collage.

One day I was walking around the town and I saw a woman at a coffee shop with her dog and each of them were drinking from their own mug. The owner had her animal friend, dressed up and arranged.
I realized how similar they were and how the lady transferred onto the dog her personality.

I present to you the final piece... Glam Dog

This project has opened for me, new ways of working with typography, collage and textures.

So I took it further on for the stencil print technique.

It is quite similar to the monotype project, but you need to cut the image in different parts and ink them separately and then add them layer by layer on the paper…no, not in Photoshop ;-).

 And after that, the piece is put inside the printmaking press. Here are the results and the mixed media image. 

Mr. Peacock

Linocut was probably one of my favorite techniques because of the artistic effects that you can get, and it also allows the possibility of making a series of unique pieces by combining colors and various papers.

I played around with this process and I used several printed sheets with digital photography
and textures on it. After that I transferred the block onto the surface.

With creativity and freedom of expression, this printmaking technique can be pushed into new unconventional prints that can add individuality in your work.

The actual idea of the project was to create an image for a youth clothing store that would be called 

"Mr. Peacock"

And it will had a street style rough personality, in the same time sophisticated, with vintage influences.

This is the starting point for developing the brand architecture and line of communication.

Monotype

And now let's talk about a new type of printmaking made by drawing or painting on a smooth, non-absorbent surface. Monotype involves the transfer of ink from a plate to the paper, canvas, or other surface that will ultimately hold the work of art. It is often spontaneously executed and with no previous sketch.

The articulation of imagery is dependent on one unique inking, resulting in one unique print.

 And this was another occasion for me to combine this experiment with digital collage and hand drawn type.

Etching

Starting with this post I am going to showcase some of the new experiments that I applied and added to my illustration skills. Etching printing technique can be an interesting way of adding nice effects on the illustrations. 

Especially when you merge them with digital media. Since I love using hand drawn type, collage and textures, I transformed my traditional piece and this is my result *

* again you will find animals, because it was an extension for the previous task on wildlife imagery

Subliminal marks -> Collage Illustrations

During the "Drawing for Illustrators" course, we were asked to produce 5 subliminal drawings on a 18"x 24" paper, starting with pencil mark making and further on with different themes from music to variety, drowning.

The main purpose was to discover what lines, textures represent us and to make new combinations that will help develop our artistic repertoire of image making. This experiment is helpful because it allows freedom and self introspection, so you are able to produce your own marks that will be used in your artwork.

I have chosen here my Variety Project and my first one Pencil Marks.

I realized that I should do more often this process, to expand my aesthetic style.

Remember the previous post with wildlife illustration? Well, using these marks I created on the next task, 2 animal collage pieces created with these experiments.

Drawing...Oatland Island

Wildlife drawing can be a great experience and a new challenge for discovering new ways of storytelling.

Oatland Island is is one of the premier wildlife attractions in the southeast, so for the reportage drawing class,

I had the occasion to explore the environment through observational drawings that in the end, will turn out in 3 final pieces that can reveal some particularities of the place.

So...these are some of the sketches used as a starting point

My interest was to use line as a basic visual expression to emphasize the relation between the animals and their outside/inside space.

 

Rough & Ready

One of my last illustration projects done at Scad for this quarter, has been an interesting experience, exchanging with National University of Art, Bucharest, Graphic Arts department.

We created a Facebook page and each of us had to make one thumbnail and then switch with someone else's drawing, for the final images. The theme was " The Mysterious Stranger" and I received this piece:

The idea was to go back in time and recreate the childhood universe of the character.
